Knee, Ankle & Foot Pain

What Is Knee, Ankle & Foot Pain?

The knee is the largest joint in the body. Whether kicking a ball, climbing stairs or doing the fox trot, your knees combine flexibility and stability, both of which are important for coordinated and dynamic movement. Many people can suffer from knee problems, from strains or injury as well as from degenerative changes such as osteoarthritis, especially as we age.  Understanding how the knee works and, importantly, how it relates to the wider body is key in preventing and resolving many injuries.

You put your feet through a lot. Most of us take over a million steps every year, so it’s important that your ankle and foot function effectively.  Performing the complex job of sensing different terrains and transferring weight and load from the ground up through your body allows you to move freely and efficiently through space.  You could say that it all starts with the foot, and any imbalances in your foot or ankle can lead to problems locally, or elsewhere higher up in your body.

Knee pain and stiffness can be caused by problems in the knee itself (ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bones), tensions in the surrounding muscles or due to restrictions or misalignment in the back, pelvis, hip or ankle.

What Are The Symptoms Of Knee, Ankle & Foot Pain?

Knee, ankle and foot pain can manifest in various ways, including swelling, tenderness, stiffness and difficulty moving the affected joint. The pain may be sharp or dull, and you might experience discomfort when walking, running, or even standing for extended periods. Common causes of these pains include injuries such as sprains, fractures or strains, as well as conditions like arthritis or plantar fasciitis.

In the knee, pain is often felt in the front or back, accompanied by swelling or difficulty bending or straightening the leg. Ankle pain can result in instability or weakness, making it difficult to bear weight. Foot pain may present soreness in the arch, heel or toes, often associated with conditions like bunions or Achilles tendonitis.

If left untreated, these issues can lead to chronic pain, impaired mobility, and even long-term disability. Compensating for the pain by altering your gait or posture may strain other parts of your body, leading to additional injuries. Addressing knee, ankle and foot pain early with proper care is crucial to avoiding these consequences and maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing/Treating Knee, Ankle & Foot Pain?

At Rebalance Clinic, we see people for a wide range of conditions, some of which are trauma related. This includes cases where people have experienced full tears, sprained ligaments, damaged muscles or irritated joints. We also treat individuals with osteoarthritis, where the joints become painful due to cartilage wear.

To diagnose the underlying causes of pain, we use diagnostic ultrasound. As part of our treatment approach, we incorporate manual therapy, K laser, shockwave therapy, taping and Western Medical acupuncture to help patients move and recover as quickly as possible.

Based on the assessment, we develop tailored treatment plans that may incorporate various therapeutic techniques:

  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to mobilise joints and soft tissues, aiming to reduce pain and improve function.
  • Laser Therapy: Utilising advanced technology to promote healing, reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
  • Shockwave Therapy: Employing acoustic waves to stimulate healing in chronic conditions, particularly effective for tendon-related issues.
  • Osteo Sports Massage: Combining deep tissue and neuromuscular techniques to address muscle tension and support recovery.
  • Pilates: Incorporating exercises to enhance strength, flexibility and balance, tailored to each individual’s needs.

At Rebalance Clinic, whether you’re dealing with the aftermath of an injury or managing a long-term condition like arthritis, our goal is to restore movement, relieve pain and improve your quality of life.
