Migraines are a complex neurological condition characterized by intense, throbbing headaches, often accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light and sound.

Ocassionally accompanied by visual disturbances known as auras, these episodes can last anywhere from a few hours to several days, significantly impacting an individual’s quality of life.

Migraines occur due to abnormal brain activity that temporarily affects nerve signals, chemicals, and blood vessels in the brain. While the exact mechanism is not fully understood, several factors can contribute to the onset of migraines. Migraines impact over 10% of people worldwide and can have a debilitating effect on an individual’s daily life.

Genetics often play a prominent role, with many people inheriting a predisposition to migraines from their family. Hormonal changes can trigger migraines in women, especially during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause. Environmental and lifestyle factors, such as stress, lack of sleep, and dietary triggers, like caffeine or alcohol, also play a significant role in exacerbating symptoms.

Migraines are more than just severe headaches; they are a chronic condition that often requires comprehensive management, including medication, lifestyle adjustments, and preventive strategies. Understanding the triggers and early symptoms is key to mitigating the frequency and severity of attacks, improving the overall quality of life for those affected.

What are the symptoms of Migraines?

Migraines are characterized by a range of symptoms that can vary in intensity and duration. The most notable symptom is a severe, throbbing headache, often localized to one side of the head, although it can affect both sides. This pain may worsen with physical activity or movement.

Many individuals experience nausea or vomiting during a migraine attack, which can further disrupt daily activities. Sensitivity to light, sound, and sometimes smells is also common, prompting many sufferers to seek a dark, quiet environment for relief.

For some, migraines are preceded by an aura, a set of neurological symptoms that may include visual disturbances like flashing lights, blind spots, or zigzag patterns. Other aura symptoms can include tingling sensations in the hands or face, difficulty speaking, or temporary vision loss.

Additional symptoms may include fatigue, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating, often lingering after the headache subsides in what is known as the postdrome phase.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Migraines?

At Spacibo Therapeutic Massage, we focus on helping people release the tension in the back of the neck—that’s usually the main cause of the migraine. Whether they are hormonal, nutrient deficiencies, or something else, at the end of the day, the muscles in the back of the neck tighten up. We need to release those muscles so that blood flow moves freely between the skull and the rest of the body so it doesn’t feel trapped.

Quite often, people feel pressure, see changes in colors when they have migraines, or may even shut down for a day, just laying in darkness all day long. By getting regular massage treatments, working on the neck, posture, and suboccipital muscles, we’re able to help. Initially, we shorten the duration of the migraine. Then, we reduce the frequency so they don’t happen as often. Eventually, they don’t happen at all because the underlying tension is resolved.

With proper maintenance, the migraines do go away for good.
